En un futuro no muy lejano, Gran Bretaña es un país totalitario dirigido con mano de hierro por un tirano (John Hurt). Una tarde, tras el toque de queda nocturno, la joven Evey (Natalie Portman) es rescatada en plena calle por un misterioso enmascarado cuyo nombre es V (Hugo Weaving). El intrigante personaje aprovecha para mostrar a Evey sus planes futuros para intentar enmendar la situación de falta de libertad. A partir de ese momento, la aparición y las acciones de V irán encaminadas a despertar una revolución en todo el país contra el gobierno fascista.
