Û² This debut album from the Spanish stoner/doom/thrash band ²Û
Û² Rhino has just been picked up by the American label Arctic ²Û
Û² Music for rerelease here in the States later this year, but ²Û
Û² we've got the original Spanish release from Odio Sonoro here, ²Û
Û² and fans of ultra heavy stoner metal will bug out for Rhino's ²Û
Û² ferocious blend of brutal sludgecore, soaring dark rock, and ²Û
Û² ragged thrash metal. Imagine a cross between High On Fire, ²Û
Û² Alice In Chains circa Dirt, Danzig's first two albums, Kreator, ²Û
Û² and Crowbar, with an awesome, deep, soulful lead singer, and ²Û
Û² you'll have a rough idea of what Rhino sounds like...sure, ²Û
Û² those references do kind of look odd together, but that's the ²Û
Û² best comparison I can come up for Rhino. They've managed to ²Û
Û² create a masive riff heavy sound that is ULTRA catchy and ²Û
Û² impossibly rockin', enough that I easily see these guys getting ²Û
Û² HUGE with fans of stuff like Black Label Society, but Breed The ²Û
Û² Chosen One is way, way heavier than anything you'd hear on rock ²Û
Û² radio, with one foot in raw doom metal and the other in ²Û
Û² bestial, old school thrash metal, at times channeling the sound ²Û
Û² of High On Fire's Blessed Black Wings backed up by a chorus of ²Û
Û² undead Layne Staley's, or Slayer forcefed a steady diet of ²Û
Û² Southern Lord albums. Man, I love this album, and I've been ²Û
Û² playing it nonstop since it came in. Awesome riffs, thunderous ²Û
Û² drumming, wicked vocals that switch between sick tortured ²Û
Û² howling to that Layne Staley-style croon, massive stretches of ²Û
Û² molten doom, ugh....this album rules. The artwork is awesome, ²Û
Û² all black and red illustrations of goat's heads and demonic ²Û
Û² thugs, and the song titles are pure luciferian kitsch: ""Name ²Û
Û² The Horn Bearer", "Exposed To The Rotten Sun", aND "Goat Behind ²Û
Û² The Gates" stand out as some of my favorites. And that awesome ²Û
Û² final track "Goat Behind The Gates" recasts Alice In Chains as ²Û
Û² pure Sabbathian doom...awesome. Sure, alot of Rhino's lyrics ²Û
Û² are flat-out dumb and read like Glenn Danzig's writings on PCP, ²Û
Û² but it works fine with Rhino's brand of crushing biker ²Û
Û² doomthrash. ²Û
Û² Nice package for this album, with a six-panel digipack and ²Û
Û² 12-page accompanying booklet. ²Û

Û² REVIEW FROM TERRORIZER: With no accompanying press release, ²Û
Û² sparse information in the booklet and very little to be found ²Û
Û² on t´internet, Spain´s Rhino must be more than happy to let ²Û
Û² their music do the talking for them. Part stoner doom, part ²Û
Û² thrash, this is as heavy as their moniker "St Anger" as a ²Û
Û² Down/Goatsnake tribute and invited Spice (Ex-Spiritual Beggars) ²Û
Û² to add his immense voice, "Breed The Chosen One" could have ²Û
Û² been the result. If this sounds promising as a blueprint, the ²Û
Û² reality is even better. "Name The Horn Bearer" and the epic ²Û
Û² closer "Goat Behind The Gates" are simply stunning examples of ²Û
Û² pure doom, while "Loaded With Thunder" echoes proto-thrashers ²Û
Û² Hellhammer. Safe to say that if Rhino were American they´d have ²Û
Û² been snapped up by a major label by now. But just for the ²Û
Û² moment they remain our little secret. TERRORIZER, 8 out of 10 ²Û
