Û² It came out of nowhere in 1982, this punk rock/hardcore ²Û
Û² fireball with the bright yellow sleeve. In one sense, The Zero ²Û
Û² Boys' Vicious Circle was yet another example of how U.S. punk ²Û
Û² seemed to peak coast to coast that year. But unlike most ²Û
Û² coastal punk, the Zero Boys were pointing the way to a scene ²Û
Û² that could accommodate heaping helpings of melody, ²Û
Û² intelligence, and rock 'n' roll sus, not just turbo-charged ²Û
Û² ferocity. ²Û
Û² ²Û
Û² From 1979 into '83, the Indianapolis based ZBs were the finest ²Û
Û² hardcore blitz in the Midwest if not all the lower 48 states. ²Û
Û² Proof is Vicious Circle and the two decades since of copyists, ²Û
Û² bootleggers, practitioners and reunion concert pogoers. ²Û
Û² ²Û
Û² Though before and after that LP's 1982 release they recorded ²Û
Û² the Livin' in the 80's 7", songs for three comps and released ²Û
Û² the post-mortem History Of... cassette revealing their ²Û
Û² transformation into a toured band warming to the metaphysical ²Û
Û² and their demise while still waving torches of rock 'n' roll ²Û
Û² panache. ²Û
Û² ²Û
Û² Now, collected here and remastered from the original tapes is ²Û
Û² the proof, if more was needed, that their take of American ²Û
Û² hardcore wasn't all white bread numbers. Yeah, they played ²Û
Û² shows with Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, Subhumans, and others ²Û
Û² but in Terry "Hollywood" Howe's guitar there was harmonious ²Û
Û² terror and unstoppable cadence. Terry's licks and chops -- a ²Û
Û² leap beyond two or three chord punk -- offered a zone and ²Û
Û² measured count for drummer Mark Cutsinger and bassist David ²Û
Û² "Tufty" Clough, a rhythm unit in par with the Minutemen if not ²Û
Û² The Meters, to run lines like quicksilver. Meanwhile, frontman, ²Û
Û² Paul "Z" Mahern provides a constant wash from beginning to end. ²Û
Û² ²Û
Û² When the Ramones lost it, the Zero Boys found it; Adding a slam ²Û
Û² brigade fist to the Blitzkrieg Beat. The Zero Boys managed to ²Û
Û² come with one of the best early 80's punk records, or one of ²Û
Û² the best records ever, period. ²Û
Û² ²Û
Û² Between Vicious Circle and History Of, the entire recorded ²Û
Û² output of this legendary Midwest punk band's original line up ²Û
Û² is, finally, collected. ²Û
Û² ²Û
Û² If you like it, buy it. ²Û
