Sinopsis:
Es la historia de amor de Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore) y Stacie Andrée (Ellen Page) y su lucha por la justicia. A la condecorada policía de Nueva Jersey Laurel le diagnostican cáncer y quiere dejar su pensión ganada durante años a su pareja de hecho, Stacie. Sin embargo, los funcionarios del condado legisladores (Freeholders), que no ven con buenos ojos la pareja homosexual, conspiran para evitarlo. El detective Dan Wells (Michael Shannon) y el activista Steven Goldstein (Steve Carrell) se unen en su defensa, reuniendo a oficiales de policía y ciudadanos de a pie para apoyar su lucha por la igualdad.
