Ambientada en el futuro, Metrópolis es una grandiosa ciudad habitada por humanos y robots, los cohabitantes de una sociedad estrictamente segmentada. En medio del caos creado por facciones de robots, el detective Shunsaku Ban y su secuaz Kenichi buscan al rebelde científico el Dr. Laughton, para arrestarle y quitarle su última creación, Tima, una preciosa joven. Cuando les localizan, Shunsaku pronto se da cuenta que el excéntrico científico está muy lejos de su alcance, ya que le protege un hombre muy poderoso cuyo deseo más feroz es recuperar una trágica figura de su pasado.
